Widespread Water Damage From Frozen Pipe Bursts in Rhode Island and Massachusetts
The first week of the new year 2018 plunged most of the country into a deep freeze. Every state except for Hawaii saw temperatures below freezing. Massachusetts and Rhode Island saw wind chills as low as -25°! In addition to the wind chills, New England saw 11 consecutive days below freezing, the longest streak in 100 years. These extreme low temperatures contributed to frozen pipe breaks across the region. When water in the pipes freeze, it expands and causes the pipe to burst. Residents were relieved to see temperatures back above freezing the next week. However, any previously frozen water in the burst pipes then began to flow.
ServiceMaster Dynamic Cleaning responded to dozens of phone calls for water damage restoration in MA and RI. A local MA high school was one of the many businesses and municipalities affected by flooding from frozen pipe bursts. Our crews arrived at the school within an hour of the first call. The technicians worked quickly to provide emergency services and the school was back in session the next day!
Flooding from the frozen pipe burst affected the high school's library, classrooms and supply room.
The carpets and tiled floors were saturated with water that rained down from the pipe break and the ceiling tiles and insulation had to be removed. We extracted the standing water, cleaned & sanitized the structures and cleaned & deodorized the carpets.
Drying equipment was placed in the affected classrooms, library, and the supply room.
